Learning new things is inherent to our human condition. It is our passport to the future, and the tool with which we will build the world of tomorrow. Education has always been an evolving discipline, changing and adapting to new times. The explosive advancements in technology and the massive value based changes in society are making this development faster than ever before, and offers an exciting opportunity to imagine how learning and creating will change over the next ten to fifteen years.

Here are 15 projections and declarations of what we expect will shape and influence the future of learning & education according to our spring 2015 research study.

Personal development and individual growth will become the cornerstone of any educational program.
No matter which discipline or field of studies you are in, everything will start with you, and the purpose of your learning choices.

Ontological design will be a key discipline to help us use the power of our brain to design the kind of mind we want to have, so that then later we can use that mind to design what world we want to create around us.

Cognition and our capacity to understand new ideas and concepts will become a highly sensitory and engaging experience. We no longer need just to  “think” about an idea, now we can easily visualize it and construct it in various different formats that can help enhance our ability to better comprehend them.

Learning quantum physics through holographic models? Understanding complex philosophical concepts in the shape of a 3D-printed sculpture?, Learning history by immersing ourselves into a digital projection of past events?: The potential that technology offers to make the learning experience more engaging and interactive is endless.

Information is accessible as ever before. Knowledge is no longer only confined to libraries and schools, the whole world  is literally in the palm of our hand. Immense amounts of data are being created, curated and shared by the crowd every single second and learning is becoming by essence a highly social and collective experience.

Education will play an influential role in helping us learn how to communicate better and use the power of language to establish dialogue with others in a generative manner.

Our population is ageing faster, and elders are becoming a large and relevant group in our societies.

They are healthier, empowered, and will live longer lives than their predecessors after their retirement years.

What it means to age ,and what you do with your late life will change. Elders will be eager and hungry to learn new things and gain new perspectives, and will demand fresh high quality content from educational institutions.

New technologies like Oculus will break down the barriers of the digital screen, and will enable a new long-distance educational landscape to  emerge, allowing us to provide and receive content in a highly engaging and participatory way.

The classroom of the future is just out there

Being close to nature helps us, human beings, be more relaxed, focused and at ease. An ideal comfort space that enhances and strengthen the learning experience.

The classroom of the future will be outdoors, and will offer us all its dynamic possibilities to learn and understand new things while doing, sensing and experiencing with our whole selves, body and mind.

Creating a more just and flourishing world

We all know that the income gap between rich and poor is growing at an alarming pace. Our planet is becoming increasingly divided as it is interconnected.

Education will need to rethink its purpose and see itself as the answer to the creation of a more just and fair world.

Educational institutions will have the responsibility to take a stand for their values, and the obligation to prepare, educate and train change makers that can work and take action to improve our societies and ensure plenitude for everyone.

Finally, education as an effective human right

The rise of new large economies like Brazil, India or China will accelerate the possibilities of making education more accessible to large population groups that only a few decades ago were impoverished and abandoned.

Education is one of the most powerful instruments for reducing poverty and inequality, and guaranteeing access to different forms of learning to all parts of society, regardless of their income, will be a major investment that countries will have to make in order to ignite, develop and retain creative capital, the future currency across the globe.

This research project was done in the spring of 2015 by Bespoke.

It is intended to serve as a source of inspiration for individuals and organizations working with education and other related fields. Our approach is based on a combination of different creative and analytical research methods, and aims to spark and encourage imaginative thinking that can lead to more creative and innovative future solutions and scenarios for the sector.
